Addiction - Monthly Talking Topic
Start Date: 01/01/2025
End Date: 01/01/2025
Alcohol addiction This month we are focussing on addictions and will start looking specifically at Alcohol Addiction which is one of the most common and widespread forms of addiction. Drinking alcohol is normalised in society and there are obvious connections between social situations and alcohol. One effect of drinking alcohol is that it can lead to an increase in beta-endorphins. These neuropeptides can lead to an increase in feeling happy and relaxed in social situations. If we are attempting to overcome a challenge in life or simply feel ‘better about things’ it makes some sense that we see a connection with something we can easily do as a ‘coping mechanism’ to get us back in control. But as we know, it’s difficult to control something that can impact on the way the brain functions! It becomes a Catch 22 situation! Over time, the brain recognises the ‘escapism’ feeling caused by that positive response so it starts to crave it - seeking more of the behaviour or substances until eventually, it becomes addicted. We’ll start by having a look at common behavioural patterns that are are linked with the social aspects of understanding addiction.
